Condition of the Battery
As with any car part, a vehicle’s battery is subject to degradation as both time and general use wear it down. Corrosion, for example, is inevitable as the component does its job. You can see this when you open the hood and spot a pile of white or greenish powdery residue around the terminals. This buildup can hinder the battery’s ability to charge and discharge energy. Rust or water damage can have a similar impact, and driving on salt-covered winter roads can hasten that damage. Even a relatively fresh battery can suffer from these problems, so performing a quick visual inspection of it is a good idea if you notice your car is struggling to start.
Weather
Buffalo’s frigid winters can heavily impact the battery of any vehicle. Cold weather can cause short-term problems due to slowing down the chemical reactions it uses to generate energy. It will likely still start your vehicle, but it will work harder to do so and cause a frustrating delay before your commute across I-190. If the temperatures fall well below zero, the materials inside it could freeze, causing permanent damage or even total failure. Other common points of failure include spark plugs, fuel injectors, or timing belts.
